In this first volume, Mr. Ibie gives us an indepth and comprehensive overview of Orunmila, the oracular divinity. Beginning with chapter 1, The Author's Early Association With Orunmila and continuing to chapter 13, the author brings the reader to a very extensive examination of each of the sixteen Olodus, (Apostles of Orunmila) in order of their seniority beginning with Eji Ogbe and ending with Ofun Meji. This seventeen volume series gives a thorough religious and spirtual discourse on Ifism through these very Complete Works of Orunmila. Introduction. Illustrations. 251pp.

In this volume, the work of Ejiogbe, detailing how man created his own god, is a continuation of the first volume following the same general outline. The only major difference is the deviation in Chapter 9 from the orthodox thematic on Ifism to a cursory examination of the three main religions. It was not originally intended to embark on such an iconoclastic exercise. It was only provoked by Orunmila's observation on the pollution of simple truths by Institutional conventions and dogma. The only other variation is on the vexed question of Ifa divination. Were it not for Orunmila who himself authorized the superficial revelation of that aspect of his work, the author would not have had the courage to delve into it. No human being taught the author the art of divination. He was taught over a two night period by Orunmila himself for the benefit of humanity. Preface. Introduction. Illustrations. 242pp.

In this Volume, Mr. C. Osamaro Ibie continues his revelations of the Odus (Sacred text of Ifa). In addition to revealing the earthly works performed by each Odu (Disciple of Orunmila), Mr. Ibie also gives account as in his previous volumes of the heavenly works of the Odus as well. This book I contains the fifteen Odus of Irosun and Owanrin. Once again as in earlier volumes, the reader, whether novice or initiate will be amazed at the amount of information contained in this series which has never before been published. Through the sacred text of each Odu, the reader is brought into the world of the divinity Orunmila (the oracular divinity of Wisdom), Gods own witness to creation, also known as Eleri Ukpin. As there are spirits in the earth, so the Yoruba belive that there are spirits dwelling in the rivers, lagoons and the sea. These spirits are revered principally by those who dwell near rivers, lagoons or the sea and who believe that the spirits, if suitably provided can in return provide man's needs. They control abundance offish, they prevent the capsizing of canoes and river accidents; some of the spirits supply children to the barren. YEMONJA, for example, is believed to be the goddess of waters generally and from her body, according to the people's belief, all rivers, lagoons and the sea flow out. Today she is associated with the Ogun River and is given elaborate worship in those areas through which it flows, particularly in Abeokuta. Illustrations, Photograph, Index, 200 pp.

Osun Across the Watersby Joseph M. Murphy
This work, a compilation of various pieces by a diverse group of authors, is easily the best single book on the Orisa Osun that has been presented in English. Not only are many different traditions (Ifa, Lukumi, Candomble, etc.) represented, but Osun's multifaceted presence is expressed through a variety of eyes - all sharing small pieces of a much larger whole. I was particularly impressed with the pieces by Abiodun and Abimbola and found the ideas presented to be fascinating. The book has several wonderful pictures, a great number of chants and Odu verses and a wealth of information. I waited for quite some time for this book to be released and it was well worth the wait!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the wonderful Orisa Osun!!Baba Ifa Karade
IMOYE A Definition of The Ifa TraditionClearly and methodically, Baba Ifa Karade renders an outstanding depth of insight into the Ifa tradition. Beginning with its "Genesis" and progressing to the religious traditions and practices, Mr. Karade states "It is important for the devotees of the yoruba faith to explore the origins of the Yoruba in both historical and cultural dimensions in addition to studying the structure of the Ifa philosophy and religious culture. By studying and contemplating upon the vast richness of the tradition, devotees are also less likely to rest upon the "Occult-like" levels and rise to the plateau of realizing Ifa as a path to inner enlightment and divine reflection. This literary work represents a courageous step in broadening and elaborating on previously held concepts by some devotees and non-devotees alike that rested upon cultural imitations, while gaining no understanding of the ultimate purpose and directives of the deepness of the African ancestral thought, behavior and concepts of the world at large and divine realms. This book clearly places Baba Ifa Karade among the uninhibited, who would elevate the philosophy and directives of the Ifa tradition.  Photographs, Glossary, Footnotes, Index

The Altar of My Soul : The Living Traditions of Santeria
by Marta Moreno Vega

Marta Moreno Vega, Ph.D., provides a necessary book to show that SanterĂa is not "scary". It's not the dark and mysterious plot of bad movies.  It reminds us that religion is a wonderful growth experience rooted in humility, the unknown, family, community and knowledge.  The book takes us through a spiritual and emotional development that starts with Dr. Vega's childhood.  She revisits memories of her mother's adamant Catholicism and her grandmother's unspoken faith.  We eventually see how the family returns to the original faith when crisis strikes, and how the faith would reunite broken families even after death

Min. Ra Ifagbemi Babalawo

It is gratifying to know that Min. Ra Ifagbemi has produced a manual on Obi divination. While brilliantly pioneering this subject, he has precisely and concisely created a work of great practicality Based on the age old Yoruba Oracle Obi, this book will certainly become a standard reference for Obi divination; allowing the reader to comprehend the full potential and divine message from the mouth of the Spirit of Creation itself.Obi Abata, which is the focus of this work is the simplest Ifa Oracle. It requires no initiations nor prescribed animal sacrifices. But, be not fooled, although apparently simple, it is extremely accurate and has the power to mathematically generate one leg of the Ifa Ikin and Opele oracles. Obi, when properly cast, reveals the exact state of affairs of any situation. Illustrations

OBI:Oracle of Cuban Santeria
by Ocha'Ni Lele
"This book is incredible! I got it two days ago, and devoured it in two sittings. Not only is this the most complete resource that I have ever read about Obi divination, but it is the most beautifully written book about orisha worship that I have ever read. Honestly, I expected something that would be a dry read, but the introduction to this book about the author's visit to the ocean brought tears to my eyes. Ochani's first book "The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination" was wonderful, but the writing in this book far surpasses that. A must-have for any personal library."
The Study of Fire, An Anthology H.L. Ayalosa Ayobunmi Sosi Sangode
The ancient religion of the Yoruba of Nigeria is one of those great polytheistic, multi-cult, pagan systems. It has provided human society with the knowledge of the vast pantheon of gods and goddesses which actually control human life and who are the causes of its miseries and success. Sango is a divine prototype, a god, a divinity or an african saint (whichever you prefer), to whom all of those born with certain fiery proclivities, certain bombastic temperments, may identify. This is why African religion has Fire Gods, Water Gods, Earth Gods and Air Gods. It is why human types can "find" themselves; and by a study of the characteristics of their patron God or Goddess can understand more perfectly, the strange moods, events, failures and triumphs of their lives. H.L. lyalosa Ayobunmi Sosi Sangode brings us face to face with the Cult of Sango, in addition to exploring the universality of Sango's counterparts, Thunder, Lightening and Storm Gods. Forward. Phyllis Galembo

Photographer Phyllis Galembo was invited to Nigeria in 1985 to document the research of her friend and colleague, Norma Rosen, on the design and use of traditional Edo altars, ritual objects, and ceremonial dress. From this and subsequent journeys comes this collection of spectacular photographs and essays on Nigerian and Brazilian shrines and ritual figures. The first section of this book contains rare photographs of traditional priests and priestesses and the shrine objects they use. Both the essay by Rosen, an ordained Olokun priestess, and Galembo's powerful photographs illuminate some of West Africa's elaborate cultural and religious traditions. The second section explores the Brazilian form of ancient African spiritual religion brought to the New World during the Atlantic slave trade of the sixteenth century. The connection between the Ivory Coast of Africa and the New World has been acknowledged in works on the history, anthropology literature, folklore and music of the two areas, but never has visual documentation of this depth and quality been made available. This books breaks new ground in the study of African diaspora while it provides powerful photographs that are, above all, a celebration of the senses. 83 color plates. 192 pp.

DIVINE INSPIRATION From Benin to Bahia
Dr. Yemi D. Ogunyemi
lle-Ife is a Yoruba ceremonial and trading center from which its people dispersed to find their kingdoms. It is noted for its naturalistic figures in brass and terracotta. It is ageless because it is the cradle of mankind. lle-Ife is not only the first town in Yorubaland, it is also the cultural capital of Oduduwa, the primogenitor of the Yoruba people.According to the oral literature, the Yorubaland has a very large number of deities. One of them is Orunlala who on reaching lle-Ife, assumed the name Aiyelala, a deity revered among the Atlantic Yoruba. He also claimed to be the twin brother of the notorious child, Abiku. In this narrative poem, (unique, nostalgic, salutary, divinatory and pining), the author shed light on the most powerful deities in his homeland. Illustrations. 64pp.

beings of various types, falling property into four distinct classes, viz (A) a Supreme Deity, Olorun
by Name; (B) a large class of Lesser Gods, or Orishas, their number being variously stated as 201
or 401 by their babalawos, or priests, but probably comprising over 600; (C) the spirits of the Dead

Murphy might have gone collecting 'data' for the usual academic dribble-drabble....Instead, he was after something more risky and interesting: to join the ranks of those who serve the Cuban orishas--spiritual powers who bear the names of both African gods and Catholic saints....Murphy writes as a participant-observer, neither of this tradition nor of the outside world that condemns it as so much Black Mischief....In that, the book, like Santeria itself, is a New World hybrid."--Village Voice

Metu Neter Vol. 2: Anuk Ausar, The Kamitic Initiation Systemby Ra Un Nefer Amen

What is the essence of our being? How do we truly come to "know ourselves"? What is our relationship to God? And, conversely, what is God's relationship to us -- his creation? How do we tap into the spiritual corridors of our soul? Is God some big man (anthropomorphic) in a far off place watching our every move, logging in our positive or negative actions, for his/her eventual dispensation of justice(as many of us have been taught and believe) or can God be found in all things simultaneously (pantheistic) and experienced daily? The answers to these questions and many others are delineated in this wonderful work on spiritual cultivation by an author who is clearly an authority on his subject matter -- and thus writes with enlightening conviction. The Metu Neter, vol 2, is one of the most important books of our times. Certainly it is one of the most important texts I've read. It not only awakens the reader to the historical developments in ancient "Egypitan" spiritual dynamics, but also offers the contemporary seeker a clearly defined road to his/her own spiritual growth and development utilizing many of those same ancient modalities. Read this book. Study this book. Digest this book. Experience this book. Then, pass it on to everyone that you know.

by Afolabi A. Epega & Phillip John Neimark; HarperCollins Publishers

Epega's English translations of the 256 texts included in the oral tradition of Ifa, together with Neimark's brief commentaries, are a glimpse into a deeply rooted African tradition that exercises considerable contemporary spiritual influence worldwide. Needless to say, they are only a glimpse. As Neimark points out, the process of divination that includes client, babalawo, and oracle is a living process in which participants experience the living presence of the divine. That is more than a written text can communicate, and reading the text apart from the experience is akin to reading the Book of Common Prayer from cover to cover without the rich sensory experience of participating in a celebration of the Eucharist--useful, no doubt, but hardly exhaustive. Neimark's preface establishes the context beautifully, and the introduction gives some insight into the mathematically and socially complex system of which the texts translated here are a part. The interplay of chance and necessity enacted in the divination process is a fascinating window on a Yoruba world that is full of insights into the "organic" character of both time and space. The book will invite readers familiar with other religious and philosophical speculations on that interplay to explore familiar territory in new ways. Steve Schroeder

The Egyptian Book of the Deadby Budge E. A. Wallis

Mr. Budge's book is a wonderfull translation, and transliteration of this famous Ancient Egyptian document. With the heiroglyphics included in the transliteration, one is also able to study heiroglyphic translation as one reads the various chapters. Because the heiroglyphics are placed in the book as uniform graphics, the continuity of the pictures, helps the reader more efficiently follow the transliteration, thereby helping the reader deduce what symbols mean what, and thereby adding another facet to this wonderfull volume. The only drawback to this book, is the lack of photographs of the actual papyri. This problem is significant in some respects, but overall this volume is able to clearly define all of those items that the ancients felt were vital to get one (a deceased one) into the afterlife
West African Religious Traditions : Focus on the Akan of Ghana (Faith Meets Faith Series)
by Robert B. Fisher

From Author: My book gives a rather complete picture of the culture and religion of the Akan of Ghana. Other West Africa cultures are compared with that of the Akan to indicate their similarities and their many differences. Such a comparative study avoids many misconceptions some have about Africa. I hope that any reader will find this book an interesting introduction to Ghana. Students can find the study guides and bibliographies useful for further investigation. I recommend this book to anyone who plans to make a trip to Ghana. Use it to introduce children who makes trips to West Africa. The book has been praised by Bishop Peter Sarpong of Kumasi.
Religions of Africa : Traditions in Transformation
by Thomas Lawson

A solid basis for understanding the whole spectrum of the religions of Africa! Concise, expert, and fully accessible, this is an excellent introduction to the complex, diverse religious traditions of Africa practiced by peoples with vastly different cultures and languages. Religions of Africa outlines and clarifies the historical development of indigenous African belief systems, discusses the impact of colonization, Christianity, Islam, and liberation movements on the continent's religious evolution, and examines the interaction between time-honored customs and new worlds of thought to "illustrate the process of traditions in transformation and transformations in tradition." Lawson presents the history, myths, rituals, institutions, and sociocultural patterns of two representative groups: the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Zulu of South Africa. Through understanding the religious worlds in which these groups live, the reader gains a solid basis for understanding the whole spectrum of the religions of Africa.

Dr. Yemi D. Ogunyemi

Divided into three parts, Introduction to Yoruba Philosophy, Religion and Literature is a pyramid of Yoruba past and the present. In his search for the imprints of his antecedents, Yemi D. Ogunyemi has assembled a number of papers in which the entire universe seemed to have been lle-lfe's backyard. This is a useful book for anyone who has been touched by the winds of dispersal and multi-cultural folk memory, especially faculty members teaching African/African American Studies. "A true believer cannot do without the spirit of the wellness of Olodumare. In juxtaposing Philosophy, Religion and Literature under one cover, Yemi D. Ogunyemi has shown that one cannot do without the other, either in Yorubaland or elsewhere in the world".
